Gucci Air Force Ones – Is Gucci Ripping Off Nike?!

So there I was standing in the sport/running shoe outlet at the local mall, looking at shoes last weekend and there right before my eyes was a pair of Nike Air Force Ones and a pair of Gucci Air Force Ones! Both side by side! So whats the deal anyway? Is Gucci actually ripping the name off from Nike after they have become proven sellers? Why hasn't Nike dragged Gucci into court yet?!

Did Nike Create Air Force One? - I Don't Think So!

OK! Heres the scoop. Legally a person or a business entity can only get a trademark patent or copyrights on a unique creation that they are responsible for. Something that they or someone that they paid designed and created. You see once something becomes public domain, its out there for anyone to use. Does that make any sense to you? This is why Apple computers uses their odd apple logo. They can't claim the word “apple”.

Can Someone Own the Number “One”?? - I Don't Think So!

Well guess what? Air Force One is the name of the United States presidents plane and it hasn't been copyrighted or trademarked. In fact even if the name Air force One was cooked up by a private party it would be very difficult, if not impossible for its originator to claim because “Air Force” is public domain and the letter one is also needless to say, public domain.

Gucci Air Force Ones!! - Thats a Great Idea Luigi!! - But Please Try Being More Creative !

So while some executives at Nike may be unhappy about Gucci taking advantage of their success with a running shoe name, they should have thought about it in the beginning. At the same time while some designer at Gucci may be getting patted on the back for coming up with the idea to do their own Air Force Ones, he is also most likely being told to start being a little more creative in the future.
